Electrifying Technical Organic Syntheses
~the first major technology platform that drives the transfer of electroorganic syntheses from the laboratory to industrial scale~

Since April 1st 2023, the BMBF future cluster "Electrifying Technical Organic Syntheses" (ETOS) is in the first implementation period. ETOS is the first major technology platform that drives the transfer of electroorganic syntheses from the laboratory to industrial scale and aims to generate innovative solutions for sustainable, robust, future-proof processes and products.

The lower part of the Upper Rhine and the Rhine-Main region is one of the most potent chemical regions in Germany, home to some of the world's leading chemical companies. In ETOS, academic and industry players are working together to build an infrastructure for the large-scale establishment of organic electrosynthesis in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. The leading institutions are the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion (MPI CEC) with Prof. Dr. Siegfried R. Waldvogel as spokesperson and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrike Krewer as co-spokesperson at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), TU Darmstadt, RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau and FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg, as well as non-university research institutions, complete the expertise along the research in the field of electrosynthesis.

Congratulations to M. Sc. Swantje Pauer, PhD student at the IAM-ET!

Her outstanding poster contribution, which was presented at the 74th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) in Lyon, France, from September 3 to 8, 2023, has been awarded the BEST POSTER Prize.

Swantje's poster, titled "Model-based Kinetic Analysis and Reaction Mechanism Identification of the Cyclohexanone Reduction in a PEM-Cell", addresses the electrification of cyclohexanone synthesis and sheds light on the reaction mechanism behind the process.

This achievement is the result of a fruitful collaboration with the research group of Prof. Mahito Atobe and Prof. Naoki Shida from Yokohama National University, Japan. It is also an excellent example of the possibilities and advantages of interdisciplinary research that combines experimental work with the approach of dynamic model-based analysis. This partnership was initiated as part of the international collaboration of the BMBF Future Cluster ETOS - Electrification of Technical Organic Syntheses - and demonstrates the added value of global interdisciplinary research.

Swantje's work builds on the outstanding research of Shimizu et al: Y. Shimizu et al, ACS Energy Lett. 2023, 1010.

Congratulations to Swantje Pauer and the entire research team for their significant contributions to the field of electrochemistry and sustainable organic synthesis processes!
