Elektrifizierung Technischer Organischer Synthesen

Since April 1st 2023, the BMBF future cluster "Electrifying Technical Organic Syntheses" (ETOS) is in the first implementation period. ETOS is the first major technology platform that drives the transfer of electroorganic syntheses from the laboratory to industrial scale and aims to generate innovative solutions for sustainable, robust, future-proof processes and products.

The lower part of the Upper Rhine and the Rhine-Main region is one of the most potent chemical regions in Germany, home to some of the world's leading chemical companies. In ETOS, academic and industry players are working together to build an infrastructure for the large-scale establishment of organic electrosynthesis in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. The leading institutions are the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion (MPI CEC) with Prof. Dr. Siegfried R. Waldvogel as spokesperson and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrike Krewer as co-spokesperson at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), TU Darmstadt, RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau and FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg, as well as non-university research institutions, complete the expertise along the research in the field of electrosynthesis.

ETOS international! Five PIs of the BMBF Future Cluster ETOS take part in GJSE in Yokohama

On June 14 and 15, 2023, the 10th German-Japanese Symposium on Electrosynthesis (GJSE) took place at Keio University in Yokohama (Japan). The Japanese committee consisting of Prof. Dr. Mahito Atobe (Yokohama National University), Prof. Dr. Takashi Yamamoto, (Keio University) and Prof. Dr. Naoki Shida, co-chair (Yokohama National University) invited the German electrosynthesis community.

The GJSE was founded in Bonn (Germany) in 2010 as a fruitful series of meetings of the most renowned players in organic electrosynthesis from both countries. Since then, the meeting has been held alternately in Japan and Germany. The aim of this symposium is to strengthen cooperation and knowledge exchange in this promising and highly interdisciplinary field, which brings together organic chemists, electrochemists, materials scientists and engineers. The focus is on bringing together the leading lights of electrosynthesis from Germany and Japan to promote a lively exchange of knowledge. The synergy between these two robust communities holds immense significance as their expertise seamlessly complements each other.

This year, 5 PIs from the BMBF-Future Cluster ETOS - Electrification of Technical Organic Syntheses gave invited talks: Prof. Dr. Siegfried R. Waldvogel (ETOS spokesperson, JGU Mainz), Prof. Dr.-Ing Ulrike Krewer (ETOS co-speaker, KIT Karlsruhe), Prof. Dr. Till Opatz (JGU Mainz), Dr. Philipp Röse (KIT Karlsruhe) and Dr. Moritz Mann (JGU Mainz).

ETOS was the subject of several presentations as well as personal discussions. This and future GJSE events will contribute to the international success of ETOS.
